What do WFSA product ranges mean?

WFSA range descriptions help distinguish commercial-value products from individually specified materials. They are a starting point for selection, not a universal ranking of good, better and best. Choose the actual specification that fits the intended use.

Compare diameter, construction, coating, mass, dimensions, tolerances and documentation. Two products with the same height and opening pattern can differ in material content or finish. A familiar label does not establish every property.

How do Mzansi / Econo, standard and specified products compare?

Range descriptionSelection purposeRequired checks
Mzansi / EconoCommercial-value, price-sensitive applications where appropriateActual dimensions, coating, mass, intended load and warranty status
Standard WFSASupplied according to the stated individual product specificationThe actual label and documentation; no automatic certification
Specified / projectA defined tender, engineer or customer requirementExact material, strength, coating, tolerances, standard and evidence

A project product is defined by its requirements, not merely its price. A standard product may meet a project requirement if its actual specification and evidence do; an economy product must not be presumed equivalent.

What is the Mzansi / Econo range intended for?

The WFSA Mzansi / Econo range is a commercial-value range intended for price-sensitive applications where initial purchase price is a major consideration. Depending on the actual item, it can be considered for appropriate general-purpose, retail, hardware-store resale, temporary or lower-load applications.

Economy products are commonly selected in price-sensitive retail and hardware-store markets where initial purchase price is prioritised over a project-specific certified or warranted specification. This describes a purchasing objective, not the quality of every hardware-store product.

Confirm what the fence must contain or exclude and the environmental exposure. Temporary use does not automatically mean low loads or low risk. A temporary barrier near traffic, animals or the public may still require a defined design.

Which technical properties can differ between ranges?

PropertyWhy it matters
Wire diameter / steel sectionMaterial quantity and mechanical behaviour
Roll or coil massComparison basis; net and gross must be separated
Coating level and processProtection suited to exposure and intended life
Strength and gradeCompatibility with required loading and tension
Manufacturing toleranceHow nominal and actual dimensions are controlled
Finish and constructionWelds, joints, mesh geometry and complete assembly
Documentation / warrantyWhat is actually evidenced or promised for the item

These are possible differences, not a claim that every economy item differs in every property. If a listing omits wire diameter, coating or mass, those values remain unconfirmed. Do not fill the gap with data from a similarly named product.

What do current WFSA examples teach?

The reviewed field-fence category includes standard-labelled and Mzansi 7 / 113 / 30, 10 / 119 / 30 and 13 / 188 / 30 patterns. Equal pattern numbers do not establish equal wire diameter, coating mass or roll weight. Read the Field Fence Guide.

Some reviewed Pig Mzansi / Light netting descriptions do not state wire diameter. Do not assume the 1.80 mm diameter from a separate specified Pig listing applies to them. See Wire Netting.

WFSA has confirmed REF193 Econo at 4.8 mm and its SABS-labelled option at 5.6 mm. The REF family name alone does not make them interchangeable for a structural slab. The structural engineer must confirm the actual design.

The 15-pale raw Econo palisade descriptions and 17-pale raw descriptions differ in pale count. Count alone does not establish a security rating, coating or certification. Check profiles, gaps, rails and supports.

Does standard range mean certified?

No automatic certification is implied. Standard WFSA products are supplied according to their stated individual product specification.

Where a project requires SANS compliance, a particular grade or certified test evidence, A range name, photograph or generic description is not a certificate.

Confirm the required standard when ordering. Current status, edition and applicability matter; an old technical reference does not prove compliance with a current project.

When does the project specification take priority?

A tender, engineer, customer or approved design may define diameter, aperture, coating, tensile properties, mass, grade, finish, tolerances, certification or warranty. In those cases the required specification takes priority over a similar trade label.

Do not substitute an economy product where a tender, engineer, customer or project specification requires a specific wire diameter, coating, tensile property, mass, certification or standard.

If an alternative is proposed, Keep a written record of the accepted substitution. Do not rely on a material being visually similar.

How should coating and service life affect range selection?

For the complete explanation of zinc, alloy and outer coating systems, read the WFSA Corrosion, Galvanizing & Protective Coatings Guide.

Coating selection should be based on environmental exposure, project specification and required service life. Inland sites can still have aggressive moisture, irrigation, chemicals, fertiliser or industrial pollution.

Standard galvanised (Class C), Heavy galvanised (Class A), Zn/Al, hot-dip galvanised fabricated components, PVC/polymer and powder coating are different specifications. Consider enhanced protection for coastal, humid or aggressive environments as appropriate to the actual product.

A coating label alone does not establish coating mass or a lifespan. Confirm compatible fittings, soil contact, cuts, welds and maintenance. Read the Coating and Galvanized Wire Guide.

What warranty should be assumed for economy products?

Unless specifically stated otherwise, economy-range products are supplied without a general warranty on service life or long-term performance. Do not infer certified diameter tolerance, structural capacity or a specified coating life from Mzansi / Econo, VL or LD labels.

This does not exclude statutory consumer rights where applicable. Check the Terms and Conditions and Returns and Refunds Policy, and

Some Wholeview systems may have warranty terms of up to 15 years, subject to coating system, environmental classification, application, installation, project specification and applicable terms. This is not a blanket warranty on all Wholeview or economy products.

How should purchase comparisons be made?

Compare usable coverage and the specification needed for the job, not only the price per roll. Different roll lengths, diameters, mass or finishes can change the quantity and suitability. Include fittings, supports, installation, maintenance and replacement considerations.

Do not hard-code an old price into the technical comparison. Use the current online item or branch quotation. Store prices apply to Centurion; Bloemfontein and George have their own branch pricing.

A commercial-value selection can be appropriate when its actual material and limitations fit the job. A defined project requirement must still be met, even where a lower initial price is attractive.

What should be confirmed before buying?

State the application, height, aperture, wire or section dimensions, coating, quantities, exposure and any required standard. Identify the exact range and ask for any missing values before confirming an order.

Check nominal versus actual dimensions, net mass versus shipping mass, usable roll length and included accessories. Keep the material identification with the project documents.

Use the Specification Reading Guide to decode compact product titles. If the listing and the project disagree, resolve it with WFSA and the responsible designer before installing.

Raw Reinforcing Steel: Surface Discolouration and Damaging Corrosion

Reinforcing mesh, Y-bar and certain Brickforce products are supplied as raw or black steel without a protective zinc coating. When raw steel is exposed to humidity, rain, condensation, water or wet storage conditions, a light orange-brown layer of surface oxidation can develop quickly. Light surface rust is normal on uncoated reinforcing steel and does not by itself mean that the material is defective or unsuitable for use. Heavy flaky or scaly corrosion, deep pitting, or significant loss of steel section, mass or dimension is different and should be assessed against the applicable product and project specification.

This guidance applies to raw / black / uncoated reinforcement. Galvanized Brickforce, galvanized steel and coated reinforcement have separate protective-coating specifications and must be assessed accordingly. Surface oxidation does not establish steel grade, compliance or structural suitability; the applicable project specification and responsible engineer determine acceptance where required.

Read the reinforcing mesh and Y-bar surface-condition guidance and black-wire Brickforce guidance.

What is Mzansi fencing?

A WFSA commercial-value range for appropriate price-sensitive and general-purpose applications

Is Econo automatically suitable for temporary fencing?

No. Temporary use can still have demanding loads or public safety requirements. Assess the actual job.

Does standard mean certified?

Not automatically. Products follow their stated specification; required certification needs actual evidence.

Can economy material replace a tender specification?

Do not substitute unless every required property is met and the responsible party approves the change.

Can equal apertures hide different wire sizes?

Yes. Aperture and wire diameter are separate properties.

Do missing netting diameters mean 1.80 mm?

No.

Is standard galvanising suitable everywhere inland?

No. Select from exposure, specification and required service life.

Do economy products have a general lifespan warranty?

Unless specifically stated otherwise, no general service-life or long-term-performance warranty is implied. Applicable statutory rights remain.

Does every Wholeview fence have a 15-year warranty?

No. Any up-to-15-year terms depend on the actual system, environment, application, installation and applicable warranty conditions.

Should I compare prices per roll only?

Compare actual specification, usable length, required quantities, fittings and maintenance as well as price.
