Palisade fencing uses vertical steel pales connected to horizontal rails and supported by posts. It creates a visible physical boundary while allowing sight through the fence. The complete assembly, including gates, ground clearance and connections, determines its practical performance.
A height or the word palisade does not define a security rating. Pale profile, steel thickness, gaps, rails, posts, foundations and resistance to removal all matter. Select the fence for the site risk and
How do I read a palisade panel description?
Read height and panel width separately. A 1.8 / 3.0 panel label identifies the listed 1.8 m height and 3.0 m panel width. It does not automatically mean the installed post centres are exactly 3.0 m: posts and connections can alter the module. Confirm the installation drawing.
The 25 / 2 and 30 / 2 labels distinguish pale-size and thickness descriptions. Angle, formed and other profiles have different geometry; a single size number cannot define all of them.
The number of pales is a separate item. A 15-pale panel and a 17-pale panel can have different gaps even at the same width. Confirm clear gaps at the widest opening, the end gaps and the connection layout rather than dividing width by pale count and calling the result a clear gap.
Which palisade panels are listed by WFSA?
The reviewed online category contains four raw panels and one raw sliding gate. These are distinct products; a gate is not a fifth panel specification. The table reflects the panel labels and does not add an unverified coating, rail size, post section or certification.
| Listed panel size | Pale label | Pales | Finish | Range label | Product |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.8 m × 3.0 m | 25 / 2 | 15 | Raw | Econo | Shop panel ↗ |
| 1.8 m × 3.0 m | 30 / 2 | 15 | Raw | Econo | Shop panel ↗ |
| 1.8 m × 3.0 m | 25 / 2 | 17 | Raw | Shop panel ↗ | |
| 1.8 m × 3.0 m | 30 / 2 | 17 | Raw | Shop panel ↗ |
Raw means uncoated steel in these descriptions. Plan suitable preparation and corrosion protection for the actual environment. Confirm whether posts, brackets, fasteners and foundation materials are included in your quotation. Product shipping dimensions are not a panel fabrication drawing.
How do pale profile, thickness and head shape affect selection?
The pale profile affects bending behaviour and the space available through the fence. Material grade, thickness, formed geometry and unsupported length all contribute. A larger nominal profile or a greater pale count alone does not establish a tested security level.
Pale heads may be pointed, rounded or otherwise formed. Confirm the actual head shape, safe access, boundary position and any school, public-area or neighbouring-property requirements. Do not add a hazardous topping without assessing the complete location.
Measure the clear opening relevant to the risk: an animal, child or person can interact differently with the same panel. Avoid assuming that every palisade panel is appropriate for every residential, livestock or high-security application.
What rails, posts and fixings are required?
Rails connect the pales and transfer forces to the posts. Their section, thickness, attachment and span must match the actual panel and loads. Welding quality and corrosion protection at welds are part of the assembly, not cosmetic details.
Choose post sections and connections for height, wind, impact, terrain and security objectives. A fence post is not automatically a gate post. Include brackets, compatible bolts or approved welding details, caps and any specified measures against removal.
Fasteners should be accessible for authorised maintenance while meeting the project security detail. Do not substitute a convenient screw for the specified connection. Confirm whether on-site welding is permitted and how disturbed coatings will be restored.
How should palisade security be assessed?
Assess the complete perimeter: height, clear gaps, climbing opportunities, exposed connections, uneven ground, gates and interfaces to walls or adjacent fences. A strong panel does not compensate for an unsecured gate or an opening underneath.
Palisade provides a physical boundary and visibility. It is not an assurance that intrusion is impossible. Higher-risk facilities require a site-specific assessment, potentially including detection, controlled access and other complementary measures.
For topping options, read the Razor Wire Guide. Any razor installation needs suitable support, safe property-boundary positioning and professional handling. Compare Wholeview panel fencing when a different opening pattern is required.
What is the difference between raw, galvanised and coated palisade?
For the complete explanation of zinc, alloy and outer coating systems, read the WFSA Corrosion, Galvanizing & Protective Coatings Guide.
| Finish | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Raw steel | Surface preparation and a suitable complete protective system |
| Hot-dip galvanised after fabrication | Actual specification, drainage/venting where needed, weld and connection protection |
| Paint | Preparation, primer, topcoat, coverage and maintenance |
| Powder coating | Underlying corrosion protection, pretreatment, application and repair method |
| Polymer / Plascoat option | Actual available system and environmental specification; not assumed for the raw panels |
Coating selection should be based on environmental exposure, project specification and required service life. Inland moisture, irrigation, chemicals and pollution can also be aggressive. Coastal or humid exposure warrants consideration of enhanced protection.
The current raw panel labels do not establish a galvanised finish, coating mass, corrosion life or warranty. Repair cuts, welds and damage using the chosen system’s compatible procedure.
How is palisade generally installed?
Set out the property boundary, service locations, finished ground levels, access openings and actual module dimensions before excavating. Check sight lines and interfaces to buildings. Establish a plan for slopes and for keeping the intended ground clearance.
Install and brace posts to the specified line and level. Confirm ground conditions and foundation design; allow the specified concrete curing before loading the assembly. Fit panels and connections using the actual installation detail. Control lifting and temporary instability.
Check alignment, sharp edges, connection security, gate movement and coating damage before handover. Do not force an out-of-square module into place with excessive loads. Keep installation work away from public access and use appropriate lifting and protective equipment.
What changes on slopes or weak soil?
Slopes may require stepping, specially fabricated sections or another planned arrangement. Standard rectangular panels cannot be assumed to rack to any angle. A stepped layout must also manage the openings at ground level and the transition between panels.
Foundations depend on soil, post load, height, wind, impact and drainage. Weak, sandy, filled or waterlogged ground may require a different solution. No universal concrete-hole size is specified here for palisade. The typical WFSA roll-mesh foundation example is not a palisade engineering design.
Avoid creating water traps at post bases or burying unprotected steel accidentally. Assess retaining walls, banks, culverts and other discontinuities separately. Structural or high-risk conditions need professional design.
Which palisade gate is listed, and what must be confirmed?
Pal Slide Gate 1.8 / 3m 25x2mm Econo gate only raw ↗ is the reviewed current gate listing. The gate-only description does not establish that track, wheels, guides, catch posts, automation or foundations are included. Confirm the complete bill of materials.
Gate width, clear opening and space required for the sliding leaf are different measurements. Check the actual drawing, run-back space, stops, guide arrangement and vehicle swept path. Automation requires its own safety and installation assessment.
Gate supports carry different loads from ordinary line posts. A double swing arrangement also needs hinge posts, stops, a secure centre closure and safe leaf movement. Choose the complete system before ordering panels around the opening.
How many panels and posts do I need?
Measure the fence runs excluding gates. Divide each run by the confirmed installed module and round up for the cut schedule. A 30 m straight run at an illustrative exact 3 m module gives ten modules, but the actual post and bracket detail must be confirmed before using that as an order.
An isolated straight run of ten modules has eleven support positions when each end is supported. Shared corners can serve two runs; gates create separate support needs. Count unique positions on a plan instead of adding a new post for every panel.
Allow for cutting, slopes, corners, short returns, gate interfaces and protective finishing. Do not use one overall perimeter division to assume every panel can be installed without a cut or an offcut.
How should Econo and specified panels be compared?
The Econo panel description identifies a commercial-value option for appropriate price-sensitive applications. Compare actual pale geometry, thickness, count, rails, connections, finish and intended use. Do not label one range good or bad merely from purchase price.
Do not substitute an economy product where a tender, engineer, customer or project specification requires a specific section, thickness, coating, strength, certification or standard. A 17-pale label alone is not certification.
Unless specifically stated otherwise, economy products have no general warranty of service life or long-term performance. Applicable statutory consumer rights remain. Request the actual supplied specification and applicable warranty terms.
What should be checked before ordering and during maintenance?
Supply the plan, height, run lengths, openings, slopes, exposure and required finish. Confirm branch availability and delivery arrangements.
Inspect loose fasteners, cracked welds, damaged pales, moving posts, rust at cuts and bases, ground gaps and gate operation. Repair damage promptly using the chosen coating system. Vegetation and stored items can create climbing opportunities or trap moisture.
Keep records of the supplied materials and any project-specific design. Inspection frequency should reflect exposure, use and risk; no maintenance-free claim is made.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is palisade fencing?
A steel boundary system of vertical pales, horizontal rails, posts and connections. Its complete configuration determines performance.
Are all palisade panels the same?
No. Height, width, pale profile, thickness, pale count, rails, posts, connections and finish vary.
What size panels does the reviewed WFSA range list?
The four reviewed panel labels state 1.8 m by 3.0 m, with different pale labels and 15 or 17 pales.
Does 3 m panel width mean 3 m post centres?
Not automatically. Posts and brackets affect the installed module. Confirm the drawing.
Are WFSA listed palisade panels galvanised?
The reviewed products are labelled raw. Do not assume a protective finish is included.
Are 17 pales automatically a higher security rating?
No. Check clear gaps, profiles, connections and the full perimeter. Pale count alone is not a tested rating.
What does 25 / 2 mean?
It is a pale size/thickness label.
Can a standard panel follow any slope?
No. Confirm stepping, special sections and ground-clearance treatment for the site.
Can a line post support a gate?
Not automatically. Gate loads and connections require a suitable separately assessed support.
Does gate only include automation?
Do not assume so. Confirm track, guides, hardware, posts, foundations and automation separately.
How many panels do I need?
Calculate each run excluding gates using the actual installed module, then plan corners, cuts and offcuts.
Can I use the roll-mesh foundation example for palisade?
Not as a universal design. Soil, loads, height and the actual assembly determine foundations.
Is palisade maintenance free?
No. Inspect connections, welds, damage, corrosion, posts and gates.
Can razor wire be added?
Only with a suitable support detail, safe boundary positioning and assessment of the location. Use professional handling.
Can Econo replace a specified panel?
Only if the actual product meets every required specification; an economy label does not establish compliance.
