What is the difference between posts, standards and droppers?

ComponentFunctionWhat it does not establish
Major straining postTerminates a tensioned run and transfers loads through bracing and foundationsLength alone does not establish capacity
Corner postResists wire loads at a change in directionA corner cannot be counted as an ordinary intermediate support
Gate postCarries gate weight and operating forces, with fence loads where connectedA fence-post label does not guarantee gate suitability
Intermediate standardSupports the fence between major assembliesNot automatically an anchor or straining post
DropperMaintains individual strand spacing between supportsDoes not replace a structural post or gate post
Stay / cross braceHelps transfer loads within a designed assemblyRequires suitable connections and ground / foundation detail
AnchorProvides a specified load path to groundAn improvised peg is not automatically an adequate anchor
Major post, stays and intermediate standardA major post has diagonal stays on two sides. Intermediate standards support the mesh between major assemblies. A separate dropper spaces individual strands and is not an anchor.Major postStayStayStandardDropperIllustrative assemblies only; foundations and bracing require site assessment.

What is the difference between Y, K and H / I standards?

A standard’s profile describes its cross-section. Y profiles have three projecting legs arranged around a central section. K profiles are a related form often supplied with a different, lighter section. H / I profiles have two flanges connected by a web. Hole, rib and notch arrangements vary

Profile names alone do not establish mass per metre, steel grade, bending resistance or load capacity. H / I is not automatically a universal “strongest” option, and K is not a substitute for any Y specification simply because the length matches. Compare section geometry, actual mass, material, finish and the complete fence design.

WFSA supplies Y, K and H Standards, together with the listed security-standard variants. The supply-range table below includes products beyond the online shop.

What is a security standard?

A security standard incorporates or accepts an overhang or topping support. Its purpose and geometry must match the intended barbed-wire or razor-wire arrangement. Topping adds loads and projects beyond the main fence plane; assess clearance, boundaries, public access and the supporting structure.

Do not infer a particular overhang length, angle, topping capacity or coating from the name alone. A security standard is still not automatically an anchor post. For Wholeview systems use the specified panel posts and compatible topping arrangement; do not improvise standard-to-panel attachments.

Which WFSA standard and dropper lengths are listed?

The current online range lists Y standards at 1.8 m, 2.4 m and 3.0 m; K standards at 1.8 m and 2.4 m; and droppers at 1.25 m, 1.40 m, 1.85 m and 2.45 m. These are total item lengths, not guaranteed above-ground fence heights.

Do not change a WFSA 1.8 m, 2.4 m or 3.0 m standard to 1.85 m, 2.45 m or 3.05 m because a different range uses those lengths. Likewise, a 1.85 m dropper is not evidence that the same length standard is stocked.

The current titles do not establish every profile dimension, kg/m, hole pitch or coating thickness.

How should round and square posts be compared?

A round tube is normally described by outside diameter, wall thickness and total length. A square tube is described by outside side dimensions, wall thickness and length. A 76 mm outside diameter round tube and a 76 mm square tube do not have the same cross-section simply because the number 76 appears in both labels.

Wall thickness, grade, connections, coating and unsupported height affect suitability. A thicker or heavier tube can change handling and resistance, but capacity and foundation requirements need the complete loading and ground conditions. Raw steel, painted steel and galvanised components are different finishes.

The current posts-and-stays category includes the following labelled items. “Light” descriptions do not establish missing diameter or wall thickness. Confirm these before treating them as equivalent to a dimensioned post or stay.

Fixators, staples and screws shown in the same shop category are accessories, not structural posts. A Fixator is a panel clamp used with the appropriate screw to attach a Wholeview panel to its post; it does not replace the post or foundation.

How do stays, cross braces and anchors work?

A diagonal stay transfers part of a post’s load into a ground connection. A cross-braced assembly uses connected members and tension components to maintain geometry. An anchor restrains the assembly through an appropriate load path into soil or a foundation. These descriptions do not prescribe one arrangement for all fences.

Corners can receive pulls in two directions, and gate/end details can have different loads. The direction of each stay, its connection height, its foot detail and the available clear ground all matter. Place stays so they do not create a trip hazard, obstruct gates or interfere with livestock handling.

Use compatible bolts, clamps and connection details. Do not weld or drill a coated or thin-wall component casually without checking the connection and corrosion repair requirements.

How far apart should standards and posts be?

There is no universal spacing. Fence type, height, tension, mesh construction, ground slope, livestock pressure, security requirement, soil and wind can change the design. Mark corners, ends, gates and direction changes before filling in intermediate supports.

Keep major load-bearing assemblies separate from ordinary line supports in the estimate. A calculated spacing is a quantity assumption; it does not demonstrate that the fence can withstand the site loads. Use the project layout to determine where shorter sections, extra bracing or different foundations are needed.

Where panel fencing is supplied as a system, post centres must accommodate the panel and fixing layout. Do not apply a roll-mesh standard spacing to Wholeview or palisade panels.

What is WFSA’s typical welded / diamond-mesh support practice?

For the specific typical WFSA welded/diamond-mesh configuration, major straining/corner posts are approximately every 30 m and also at corners, ends, gates and major direction changes. Each major assembly typically uses two stays where applicable. Intermediate Y/K standards are approximately every 3 m.

Straining-wire lines are approximately 600 mm apart vertically, with binding approximately every 100 mm along those lines where applicable. Separate droppers are not required in this particular mesh configuration. The mesh and support wires still need compatible fixings and controlled tension.

Typical main-post and stay foundation estimates are approximately 400 × 400 × 600 mm each for this arrangement. They are planning dimensions, not universal engineering requirements. Sandy, weak, wet or disturbed soil may require greater embedment or a different foundation. Assess loads, groundwater, rock, slopes and erosion before construction.

How do total length and foundations affect the fence?

Available above-ground length equals total item length minus embedment, before considering any overhang or mounting detail. A 2.4 m post with 0.6 m embedment has approximately 1.8 m remaining above ground in a simple illustrative arrangement. That arithmetic does not prove 0.6 m embedment is adequate.

Foundation size depends on soil resistance and the loads transferred from the fence and gate. Concrete volume is a materials estimate, not a structural approval. A 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.6 m rectangular void is 0.096 m³ before displacement by the component and allowance for excavation variation.

Check buried services before excavation or driving standards. Protect workers around open holes and driving equipment. Allow any specified concrete curing before applying wire tension or gate weight. Detail the top of the foundation and coating repairs to reduce persistent water traps.

How many Y-standards do I need for 1 km?

Start with the actual layout. For one uninterrupted 1,000 m straight run at a maximum 3 m support interval, round up 1,000 ÷ 3 to 334 intervals, giving 335 total support positions including both ends. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a design recommendation.

You cannot order 335 Y-standards from that result without identifying the major posts. Every end, corner, gate and intermediate straining assembly may replace an ordinary standard position. Divide the layout into actual runs, count the shared major supports once and then count intermediate standards within each run.

Likewise, approximately 30 m major-post sections need to be laid out between actual corners and gates rather than simply added on top of a total standard count. Include stays only for the specified assembly and count each stay foundation separately.

For separate strand-wire fences, dropper spacing is an additional design input. A dropper is not a driven structural support and must not be counted as a substitute for one. Use the farm-fence calculator only after reconciling its assumptions with the measured layout.

What finishes and corrosion details should be confirmed?

For the complete explanation of zinc, alloy and outer coating systems, read the WFSA Corrosion, Galvanizing & Protective Coatings Guide.

Uncoated/raw steel, paint or bituminous finishes, galvanised material, hot-dip galvanising after fabrication, Zn/Al systems, powder coating and polymer coatings are different protection systems. A black appearance alone does not establish the finish or its thickness.

Select protection for exposure and required service life, including soil contact and trapped moisture. Powder coating provides finish and colour over the appropriate substrate protection; do not infer that it replaces every corrosion requirement. Confirm any available enhanced system and applicable warranty for the actual project.

Maintain cut ends, drilled holes, weld repairs and damaged fixing areas with the specified compatible repair system. Do not assume a painted post in the shop is hot-dip galvanised underneath.

How should supports be installed and maintained?

Set out line, corners, gates, finished height and ground levels before installing. Use the specified driver, lifting and connection equipment. Protect eyes, hands and feet; keep people away from a driven standard or a loaded straining assembly. Sharp heads and wire ends need suitable handling.

Check alignment and plumb before final fixing. Install bracing and foundations before applying fence tension. Never tighten a wire simply to straighten an inadequate support; resolve the support movement first.

Inspect after settling, storms, fires, impact and erosion. Look for leaning posts, moving stay feet, cracked or exposed foundations, failed ties, rust and gate sag. Repair the load path as well as the visible wire.

What should be specified when ordering supports?

Provide the fence type and height, actual lengths, run layout, corners, gate sizes, support roles, wire tension requirements, post/profile dimensions, wall thickness or kg/m, finish, soil and exposure. Include drawings where the fence or gate needs professional design.

Specify required standards or certification expressly. A Y, K, H/I, “Light” or “Heavy” name does not establish certification. Economy material must not replace a required project specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Y-standard?

An intermediate fence support with a Y-type cross-section.

What is a K-standard?

A related intermediate-standard profile often supplied with a different, lighter section. Its name alone does not establish a particular mass or capacity.

Is an H / I-standard always stronger?

No universal ranking applies. Compare actual section geometry, material and mass with the complete fence requirements.

Can intermediate standards be straining posts?

They are not automatically suitable as anchors or strainers. Use a designed major post and bracing assembly.

What is a fence dropper?

A spacer supporting separate wire strands between structural supports. It does not replace an anchor, gate post or driven line standard.

Which Y-standard lengths are currently listed by WFSA?

The current online category lists 1.8 m, 2.4 m and 3.0 m Y standards. Confirm actual supplied lengths and current availability.

Which K-standard lengths are listed?

The current online category lists 1.8 m and 2.4 m K standards.

Are 1.85 m and 2.45 m items necessarily standards?

No. Those lengths are listed for droppers in the reviewed WFSA range. Do not confuse their role with intermediate standards.

Is 3 m spacing correct for every fence?

No. It is a typical intermediate spacing for the specific WFSA welded/diamond-mesh arrangement described here. Other fences and sites require their own layout.

Does every major post need two stays?

Two stays are typical where applicable in the stated mesh arrangement. The actual number and direction depend on the assembly, loads and layout.

Are 400 × 400 × 600 mm foundations always sufficient?

No. They are approximate planning dimensions for the stated mesh arrangement. Soil, loading, gate forces, groundwater and erosion can require different foundations.

Do welded and diamond-mesh fences need droppers?

Separate droppers are not required in the specific WFSA mesh configuration described here. Other strand systems may require them.

Is 76 mm round tube the same as 76 mm square tube?

No. Outside diameter and square side dimensions describe different cross-sections.

Can a painted post be treated as hot-dip galvanised?

No.

What is a Fixator?

A panel clamp used with a compatible screw to attach a Wholeview panel to the specified post. It is an accessory, not a structural support.
