Farm Gates Guide South Africa
Choose the opening, understand the current WFSA gate labels, and plan hinges, posts, bracing and clearance.
Shop products ↗Request a quote ↗What does a farm gate need to do?
A farm gate controls access while continuing the containment objective of the adjoining fence. Select it for the actual livestock, people, vehicles and machinery using the opening. A gate that opens easily can still be unsuitable if animals can pass through its infill or underneath.
Treat the gate as an assembly: leaf, frame, infill, hinges, latch, posts, bracing, foundations and stops. Confirm what the quotation includes. A gate leaf does not define every accessory needed for installation.
Which farm gates does WFSA currently list?
| Listed height | Listed width | Frame label | Finish | Product |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,200 mm | 3 000 mm | 38 mm | Paint | Shop gate ↗ |
| 1,200 mm | 3 600 mm | 38 mm | Paint | Shop gate ↗ |
| 1,200 mm | 4 200 mm | 38 mm | Paint | Shop gate ↗ |
| 1,200 mm | 4 800 mm | 38 mm | Paint | Shop gate ↗ |
The current descriptions identify 1,200 mm high gates at 3,000, 3,600, 4,200 and 4,800 mm wide, with a 38 mm frame label and painted finish. They do not establish the wall thickness, detailed infill, hinge size or included latch hardware. Confirm these on the actual supplied gate.
Generic shipping dimensions on the product pages are not the gate opening dimensions. Use the title dimensions as preliminary product labels and obtain the installation drawing or physical measurements before setting posts.
How wide should a farm-gate opening be?
| Access purpose | Illustrative planning range | Confirm before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian / small animal access | Approximately 1 m | Animal containment and accessible passage |
| Livestock movement | Approximately 2.5–3 m | Species, group movement and handling layout |
| Vehicles | Approximately 3.5–5 m | Vehicle width, turning approach and mirrors |
| Large machinery | Project-specific, possibly wider | Implement width, turning radius and working clearance |
These are general planning examples, not mandatory opening sizes or a declaration that WFSA stocks every size. Measure the largest equipment that must pass, including attachments. A narrow approach or turn may need more clearance than a straight passage.
Clear opening, gate-leaf width and post-centre distance are different dimensions. Hinge offsets, latch clearance and post width affect them. Confirm the required installed clear opening rather than ordering a nominal width and assuming it will fit.
How are gate height and infill chosen?
Match containment to the actual animals, including young stock. Rail-only, mesh-covered and other infills offer different openings and visibility. A mesh opening suitable for large stock may allow young animals through or create head and limb entrapment risks.
For game or predator-sensitive boundaries, a short general farm gate is not automatically appropriate merely because it spans the opening. Height, bottom clearance, infill and interfaces must preserve the designed boundary.
Inspect protrusions, sharp wire ends and latch areas. Horses, handling pens and public-facing routes warrant particular attention to impact, visibility, entanglement and safe movement.
What do frame dimensions and gate bracing mean?
Frame diameter or section size is only part of the specification. Wall thickness, steel grade, leaf length, welds, infill and bracing contribute to stiffness and mass. Two gates labelled 38 mm can have different structures and uses.
Bracing helps the leaf retain its shape. A diagonal member designed as a compression brace generally rises from the lower hinge side towards the upper latch side; a tension tie generally runs from the upper hinge side towards the lower latch side. Confirm the actual member function and fabricated detail.
This schematic does not prescribe a modification to a supplied gate. A sagging leaf can also result from hinge wear or a moving post. Identify the cause before adding a brace, wheel or extra hinge.
Which hinges and latches are needed?
Choose hinges for the gate mass, leaf length, duty and actual post connection. Keep the intended hinge axis aligned to avoid binding. Adjustable hardware may assist setting, but it cannot correct an inadequately supported post or a distorted leaf.
Use a latch suitable for stock pressure, the intended users and locking requirements. Check whether animals can lift or push the closure open. Provide safe operation without trapping hands between the leaf and post.
Confirm hinges, pins, washers, brackets, latch, fasteners and protective finishing in the order. Where removal prevention is required, specify an appropriate detail without making authorised maintenance unsafe.
Can ordinary fence posts support a farm gate?
Do not assume so. Gate posts carry the leaf load and hinge forces in addition to any adjoining fence loads. A long leaf can apply substantial leverage even when its height is modest. Check the whole support, ground condition and connection.
Choose embedment, concrete and bracing for the actual assembly and soil. Weak, filled, wet or sandy ground can change the design. The typical WFSA roll-mesh 400 × 400 × 600 mm foundation example is not a universal gate-post prescription.
Keep straining loads from the adjoining fence appropriately transferred. An intermediate Y or K standard is not automatically a suitable hinge or straining post. Read the Posts and Supports Guide for component roles.
How should swing direction and ground clearance be planned?
Check the entire swept path with the actual slope and finished surface. A gate can clear the ground while closed and strike it partway through its swing. Allow for gravel, erosion, vegetation and later resurfacing.
Choose an opening direction that supports safe stock handling and traffic. The leaf must not obstruct a public road or create an uncontrolled movement hazard. Provide suitable stops and a way to secure an open gate where needed.
Bottom clearance must suit both movement and containment. A large gap can admit predators or young animals. Solve this through the overall opening and ground detail rather than assuming every gate can swing above a raised threshold.
When are double gates useful?
Two leaves can provide a wider opening or a smaller swept radius for each leaf. They also add hinges, alignment, centre closure and ground-stop details. The centre arrangement must prevent unintended movement without creating an unsafe obstruction.
Confirm which leaf opens first, how the inactive leaf is retained and how both leaves align with the latch. Ground bolts and catches must remain usable despite soil and debris. A double gate does not remove the need for suitable hinge posts.
A nominal pair width is not necessarily the usable clear opening. Consider the hinge offsets, centre gap and stops. Do not assume two single leaves form a compatible double-gate kit without confirmation.
How is a farm gate generally installed?
Measure and mark the required opening, locate services and establish finished levels. Plan the support design and safe temporary handling.
Set and brace posts as specified, then allow any concrete to develop the required strength before hanging the leaf. Fit hinges and latch using the approved details. Use safe lifting support; do not hold a heavy leaf by hand while improvising fixings.
Check level, alignment, full swing, latch engagement, open stops and ground clearance. Recheck after the assembly settles. Repair disturbed paint or other protection using a compatible system, including cuts and welds.
What does painted finish establish?
For the complete explanation of zinc, alloy and outer coating systems, read the WFSA Corrosion, Galvanizing & Protective Coatings Guide.
Paint is a finish description; it is not proof of hot-dip galvanising underneath, a particular coating thickness or a corrosion-life guarantee.
Coating selection should be based on environmental exposure, project specification and required service life. Coastal, humid, chemically aggressive and irrigated sites can need enhanced protection. Keep hinge wear areas and water traps under review.
Powder coating, polymer coating and hot-dip galvanising after fabrication are different systems. Do not treat them as alternative names for the reviewed painted gate finish. Ask about any separately required finish and its applicable terms.
Why do gates sag, and what should be maintained?
Check whether the post moved, the hinge wore, a connection loosened or the leaf distorted. Tightening a latch or adding a support wheel can disguise rather than solve the underlying problem. A wheel also depends on a suitable travel surface.
Inspect welds, frame damage, loose hardware, rust, latch reliability and clearance. Lubricate moving parts only as appropriate to the hardware. Keep vegetation and debris out of stops and catches.
Review after vehicle impact, flooding, ground movement or unusually heavy use. Maintenance frequency depends on exposure and duty. Do not describe an outdoor gate as maintenance free.
What must be confirmed before ordering a gate?
Send the required installed clear opening, height, animals or traffic, slope, exposure and a sketch or photographs. Specify frame section and wall thickness when required, infill, bracing, finish, hinges, latch, posts and any locking detail.
Confirm whether you are ordering a leaf, gate kit or complete installation. Ask about actual mass where transport or lifting planning requires it; do not use an unexplained shipping field as a certified fabrication weight.
Check the adjoining fence and gate interface together. A gate should preserve the purpose of the boundary while making routine use safe and practical. Contact the relevant branch for current availability and delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which farm-gate widths are listed by WFSA?
The reviewed range lists 3.0, 3.6, 4.2 and 4.8 m widths at 1.2 m height, with 38 mm frame labels and painted finish. Confirm the supplied details.
Is nominal gate width the clear opening?
Not automatically. Hinge, latch and post details affect the clear opening.
Are all accessories included?
Do not assume so. Confirm hinges, latch, posts, fasteners and installation materials.
Does 38 mm specify the wall thickness?
No.
Can a regular line post hold a gate?
Only if it is suitable for the actual gate loads and connection; assess the support separately.
How wide should a vehicle gate be?
Plan from the largest vehicle and its approach. Approximately 3.5–5 m is an illustrative range, not a mandatory specification.
Can the gate swing on a slope?
Check the full swept path and finished ground levels. Closed-position clearance alone is insufficient.
Why does a gate sag?
Possible causes include post movement, hinge wear, loose connections and leaf distortion. Identify the cause before modifying it.
Are double gates easier to install?
They need two supported leaves, centre closure and alignment; they are not automatically simpler.
Are painted gates galvanised?
Paint does not establish a galvanised substrate.
Can a farm gate contain game or exclude predators?
Not automatically. Height, infill, base gaps and interfaces must meet the assessed boundary objective.
What should I send for a quote?
Required clear opening, height, use, slope, exposure and the needed leaf, hardware, post and finish details.
