What is razor wire?

Razor wire is a perimeter obstacle made from sharp-edged metal tape formed around a supporting core wire. The blades create an injury hazard and a physical deterrent. It is normally part of a complete boundary system, rather than a replacement for a suitable fence, access control and maintenance.

The tape, core and connecting clips perform different jobs. Tape geometry creates the sharp edge; the core carries tension; clips connect neighbouring loops or maintain the selected arrangement. Specify each component and its coating when a project requires defined performance. A trade name does not establish blade dimensions, tensile strength or a tested security rating.

What is the difference between BTC and Flatwrap?

BTC means barbed tape concertina. Its expandable loops form a three-dimensional coil arrangement. Flatwrap presents overlapping loops in a flatter plane, generally occupying less depth alongside a wall or fence. Select against the required installed envelope, available space, boundary clearance and the supporting structure.

Neither type is universally superior. A large coil can project beyond the boundary; a flatter arrangement can still present dangerous edges. Height, blade pattern, turns, clipping, usable coverage, supports and the full security assessment all matter. Do not substitute one form merely because the purchase lengths are similar.

Which Rhino Super razor products are listed by WFSA?

The current online range contains the following four products. The coverage shown comes from the current title and description. These are nominal product descriptions; the installer must confirm usable coverage at the specified loop arrangement before ordering.

Do not stretch a coil farther simply to cover an additional metre. Excessive extension changes loop spacing and installed geometry. Advertised coverage is not a promise that every layout, corner or joined run will achieve that usable length.

Other diameters and coverage lengths require branch confirmation. The listed sizes do not establish the diameter of the core wire, the strip thickness, blade dimensions, clip count or coil mass.

What coating does WFSA use for Rhino Super razor wire?

For the complete explanation of zinc, alloy and outer coating systems, read the WFSA Corrosion, Galvanizing & Protective Coatings Guide.

WFSA manufactures Rhino Super Blade razor wire with Aluzinc strip and an Aluzinc core wire.

Galvanized razor wire uses zinc-based protection. Zn/Al or Aluzinc protection is a different coating description and must be specified as such. Do not use those names interchangeably, or assume the clips and exposed cut edges have the same protection as the strip and core.

Choose corrosion protection against coastal salts, humidity, industrial contamination, required life and maintenance. Consider suitable heavier or enhanced protection in aggressive conditions. Lighter commercial inland options are conditional on the project specification, not a universal technical preference.

How do diameter, coil spacing and stretched length differ?

Coil diameter describes the size of the loop or concertina envelope. Stretched length describes coverage along the boundary. Loop spacing describes how densely the coil is deployed. These are related installation details, but none can be inferred solely from the other.

Corners, terminations, joining overlaps and multiple rows can increase the requirement. Measure each independent run and A quantity allowance covers selected material contingencies; it does not authorize weakening the specified arrangement.

WFSA Razor Wire Calculator

Select a current product to load its nominal diameter and advertised coverage. If joins, overlap or the layout reduce usable coverage, enter the shorter confirmed length.

Enter the measured run and usable coil length.

Base coils = ceil(run × rows ÷ usable coil length). Final coils = ceil(run × rows × (1 + allowance / 100) ÷ usable coil length). Extra coils = final minus base. Diameter helps identify the product; it does not independently determine coverage or security performance.

How is razor wire generally installed?

Start with a measured drawing of the boundary, the mounting height, the available clearance and every gate or change in direction. Assess whether the existing wall or fence and its foundations can carry the added weight, wind effects and fixing loads. Use the approved bracket, support-wire and fixing arrangement for that structure.

Competent installers should control the unopened and expanding coils, establish a protected working area, and release packaging restraints in a controlled sequence. Install compatible supports and then position, join and secure the coils without uncontrolled spring movement. Do not provide tension through sharp tape or improvise attachment to a weak mesh panel.

There is no universal bracket spacing, clip count or support-wire diameter in this guide. Inspect loose loops, unsupported ends and changes in direction before handing over the installation.

Can razor wire be added to Wholeview, palisade or an existing wall?

It can form part of a properly specified perimeter upgrade, but the original support system must be checked. Wholeview posts, palisade rails or wall masonry should not be assumed to accept additional topping loads merely because they already support a fence.

Specify bracket location, fastening, coating compatibility and gate clearances. Preserve the existing panel-to-post connection and avoid modifications that compromise its corrosion system or stated warranty. Ensure razor topping does not foul gate travel, emergency access or authorised maintenance.

On a wall, assess coping, masonry condition and anchor edge distances through the appropriate project detail. On an existing fence, check post alignment, bracing, corrosion and foundations before installing the new obstacle.

What safety precautions are needed?

Razor tape can cause severe cuts and the coils store spring energy. Use competent installers, suitable cut-resistant hand and forearm protection, protective clothing, eye/face protection and the appropriate handling tools identified by the work assessment. PPE reduces exposure but does not make direct contact with blades safe.

Keep members of the public, children, animals and unauthorised workers out of the installation area. Do not leave loose coils on a walkway, lean them unsecured against a fence, or carry them in a way that exposes other people to the blades.

Height work, ladders, lifting and electrical services require a separate safe-work plan. Never install near live electrical conductors or energised fencing without competent isolation and coordination. Disposal must contain the sharp material and comply with the site’s waste procedure.

What boundary and property issues should be checked?

Keep the entire installed envelope within the authorised layout and assess access paths, adjoining property, roads and places where people may accidentally contact it.

Ask the relevant municipality, estate/body corporate and project adviser about current local restrictions, approvals and liability requirements. Do not treat this guide as blanket permission to install razor wire on any property. Appropriate signs and restricted access should form part of the site risk assessment.

How should the installation be inspected and maintained?

Inspect the whole boundary for broken brackets, loose clips, displaced coils, corrosion, damaged supports and vegetation that hides or interferes with the system. Check after storms, impact, fire or suspected intrusion. Use a schedule suited to the exposure and site risk.

Repair with compatible components and the specified deployment pattern. Corroded tape or core can remain dangerously sharp while having reduced strength; painting over deterioration does not restore lost metal. Restrict access until unsafe sections are properly secured or replaced.

Maintenance work needs the same controlled handling and protected work area as installation. Record defects and repairs so repeated problems can be traced to unsuitable supports, drainage, coating or layout.

What should I send when requesting a razor-wire quote?

Provide the measured boundary length, each independent run, BTC or Flatwrap form, required diameter/height, confirmed usable length per coil, number of parallel rows, coating and site exposure. Include wall/fence drawings, mounting height, corners, gates and access restrictions.

Ask for strip/core/clip specifications, support brackets, joining materials, compatible support wires, delivery and safe unloading. If certification or a warranty is required, identify the exact requirement and obtain written confirmation for the supplied system. No fixed service life or security certification is implied by the product name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does BTC mean?

Barbed tape concertina: expandable razor loops deployed in a three-dimensional coil arrangement.

Is Flatwrap the same as concertina?

No. Flatwrap has a flatter overlapping loop plane; concertina has an expanded coil envelope.

How long is a WFSA BTC 450 coil?

The current Rhino Super BTC 450 title and description list 10 m. Confirm usable installation coverage.

How long is BTC 730?

The current Rhino Super BTC 730 listing states 12 m.
