A high-strain single-strand product requires controlled handling, tensioning and compatible joins. A mild / low-carbon double-strand product uses a different steel specification and construction. Neither arrangement is universally superior: choose the specified finished product for the fence design. Do not infer tensile grade from single versus double strand or from a trade name.
The current WFSA range includes Agribarb, Iowa, Karoo-1, Karoo-2, VL and Mzansi. Karoo-2 explicitly carries a Heavy galvanised (Class A) label; coating class is stated separately from wire construction and tensile strength. The Mzansi single-strand option is a commercial-value range, not an automatic equivalent to a specified heavy or high-strain product.
Coating selection should be based on environmental exposure, the project specification and required service life. WFSA recommends heavy galvanising or another suitable enhanced-corrosion coating for coastal, humid and highly corrosive environments. Standard galvanised coating may be used for selected price-sensitive inland applications where the project specification and expected service life allow them; Standard galvanised coating is not a universal inland recommendation.
Wire diameter, tensile strength, coil mass and zinc coating are separate specifications. WFSA supplies Class C Standard galvanised and Class A Heavy galvanised wire. Compare the applicable coating mass at the actual wire diameter; enhanced zinc/aluminium coatings are separate systems and must be specified as such.

WFSA product tiers: Mzansi / Econo and specified ranges
The WFSA Mzansi / Econo range is a commercial-value range for selected price-sensitive, general-purpose, retail, hardware-store and lower-load applications where a project-specific certified or warranted specification is not required. Select it for the intended use; it is not an automatic substitute for heavier-duty, fully specified or standards-compliant material.
Depending on the product, differences can include actual wire diameter, coating level, mass, steel content and manufacturing tolerance. Compare the individual specifications rather than height, mesh opening or purchase price alone.
| Product tier | Purpose | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mzansi / Econo | Selected price-sensitive and general-purpose applications | Actual diameter, coating, mass, intended use and warranty status |
| Standard WFSA range | General agricultural and commercial use appropriate to the product | The stated individual product specification |
| Specified / Heavy / Compliant range | Projects requiring a defined technical specification | Exact diameter, tensile properties, coating, standard and certification required; a range label alone is not certification |
Unless specifically stated otherwise, economy / VL / LD products are not supplied with a general warranty on service life or long-term performance. This does not exclude statutory consumer rights where applicable. Read the WFSA terms and conditions and Do not use economy material as a substitute for a required structural or certified specification.
What is barbed wire?
Barbed wire consists of a line wire or twisted line wires carrying projecting barbs. It forms individual fence strands rather than a continuous mesh sheet. The fence’s performance depends on the complete arrangement: strainers, stays, intermediate supports, connections, wire type and site conditions.
Start with the purpose of the boundary, the animals or security requirements, and the approved layout. A roll length establishes how much material is supplied; it does not establish the suitable number or spacing of strands.

| Verified label examples | Agribarb: 2.00 mm / 845 m; no mass stated | Iowa: 2.00 mm / 800 m / 50 kg designation; Karoo-2: 845 m / 35 kg designation |
| Strength concept | Depends on steel properties and cross-section | Depends on steel properties and both line sections; not universally stronger |
| General use | Selected agricultural and boundary strand systems | Selected agricultural, boundary and security-topping systems |
| Price comparison | Compare cost per finished metre after required specification | Compare cost per finished metre after required specification |
| Installation | Use joints and tensioning equipment suited to its construction | Use joints suited to twisted construction; count finished metres once |
Mild / low-carbon wire and higher-strain wire describe material behaviour, not simply strand count. Higher-strength construction can allow a different wire section for a specified load, but requires compatible joining and controlled tensioning. Do not assign a tensile grade or breaking force to a WFSA roll unless its supplied specification establishes it.
Single-strand barbed wire uses one main wire, while double-strand barbed wire uses two main wires twisted together. Compare construction, steel properties, coating and roll length when choosing the specified product. Count a finished double-strand roll once when estimating fence running length.

How to read the product label
IOWA / Double / Barb / Wire / 2.00mm / 800M / 50kg gives the named range, double-strand form, displayed diameter, finished roll length and listed mass designation.
Karoo-2 / Double / Barb / Wire / Heavy galvanised (Class A) / 845M / 35kg includes an Heavy galvanised (Class A) label. Ask for the actual coating specification rather than treating the letters as a measured zinc mass. The “224” label in Karoo-1 is also not a verified wire diameter; do not convert it to 2.24 mm.
Why does barb spacing matter?
Barb spacing is the distance along the finished wire between successive barb groups. Barb count, barb-wire diameter and projection influence handling and contact characteristics; they are separate from the diameter of the main line wire.
The current WFSA product titles do not establish barb spacing for the six listed rolls. A commonly encountered spacing on a different product does not prove the WFSA specification.
Galvanizing and exposure
Check corrosion protection independently of wire diameter and steel properties. Standard and heavy galvanised finishes can have different coating masses.
For coastal, humid or chemically aggressive sites, send the location and exposure conditions to WFSA and request a suitable coating specification. Do not infer a service-life guarantee from Heavy galvanised (Class A), colour or a brand name. Inspect damage and corrosion during maintenance. Our Galvanized Wire Guide explains coating comparisons in more detail.
Diameter, strength and flexibility
Diameter is one part of selection. Wire material, manufacturing process, tensile strength, elongation and coating also matter. A thicker low-strength wire and a thinner higher-strength wire cannot be compared reliably using diameter alone.
Request the actual diameter and tolerances for line wires and barbs if these affect the project specification. WFSA’s wire coating options are Class C Standard galvanised and Class A Heavy galvanised. Avoid using a supplier’s values for a different brand or range.
How many rolls do I need?
Basic running wire = fence length × number of strands. Add the planned allowance for terminations, joints, turns and unavoidable offcuts. Round the total up to complete rolls.
For an illustrative 1,000 m fence with five strands, the basic requirement is 5,000 m. A chosen 5% allowance gives 5,250 m. At 845 m per roll, ceiling(5,250 ÷ 845) = 7 rolls; at 800 m per roll the result is also 7. Five strands and 5% are estimating inputs, not an installation recommendation.
Measure separate runs accurately and deduct gates only where appropriate. Keeping adequate usable lengths for each strained run can change the result: total metres alone do not provide a cutting or joint schedule. Use the Farm Fence Calculator for a broader material estimate.
Useful roll-length comparisons
| Roll length | Basic coverage for 3 strands | Basic coverage for 5 strands |
|---|---|---|
| 845 m | 281.67 m | 169 m |
| 800 m | 266.67 m | 160 m |
These figures divide finished running length by the selected strand count, before terminations, joints and waste. They do not specify appropriate strand counts or a practical continuous-run layout.
Posts, stays and strainers
End and corner assemblies must resist the loads generated by the tensioned fence. Intermediate supports hold the strands in position; they do not automatically provide a suitable end anchor.
Use the fence design for support spacing, foundations, stay arrangements and changes of direction. Consider soft soil, slopes, flood paths and machinery access. Coordinate gates before installing strainers so the boundary remains usable. See the Farm Fencing Guide for assembly planning.
How should barbed wire be joined?
Choose a load-bearing joint or compatible connector specified for the actual wire construction and diameter. Single, oval and twisted double-strand products are not interchangeable inputs to every joining tool. Keep barbs clear of connector seating surfaces where the selected system requires it.
Release tension in a controlled way before repairing a loaded line. Do not cut a strained wire and rely on gripping the free end. A short casual twist or damaged line wire can fail when tension is reapplied; do not conceal a weak joint by tightening harder.
Plan joins away from difficult access points and make them inspectable. Consider usable lengths between strainers and gates before dividing the total metres by the roll length.
Handling and tensioning safely
Keep the work area controlled and wear suitable gloves, eye protection, protective clothing and footwear. Use an appropriate dispenser and rated fencing tools. Tensioned wire can recoil: avoid standing in the recoil path and do not cut a loaded strand without a controlled release procedure.
Do not attempt improvised tensioning with a moving vehicle. Follow the product’s installation requirements and the safe operating procedure for the tensioner. Keep the coils and finished fence away from children, public paths and unintended contact points.
Inspection and maintenance
Inspect after storms, impacts and livestock damage. Look for loose wires, displaced stays, corroded connections, damaged posts and unsafe protruding ends. Repair damaged components without pulling additional load into an unsuitable strainer assembly.
Keep vegetation and trapped debris under control where they obstruct inspection. A strained fence line can be affected by ground movement, erosion and changes to gates. Recheck the system rather than merely tightening one loose strand repeatedly.
Where is barbed wire generally used?
Barbed wire is used in selected agricultural strand fences, boundaries and security toppings. It deters contact but does not provide a continuous small-animal barrier. Choose strand positions, visibility and safe clearance for the actual stock, neighbouring land and public access.
Consider entrapment and injury risks around horses, young stock and animals likely to charge or run into a fence. Do not assume a material suitable for one stock class is suitable for another. Security topping also needs a sound underlying fence and a site-specific assessment; sharp wire must not encroach into public access or neighbouring space.

Frequently asked questions
Is double strand twice the roll length?
No. The displayed roll length is the length of finished barbed wire, not the sum of its two line wires.
Does thicker wire always mean a stronger fence?
No. Steel properties, coating, joints, supports and the full fence design also matter.
Does WFSA manufacture barbed wire?
Yes. WFSA confirms that it manufactures single and double strand barbed wire.
What is the difference between barbed and razor wire?
Barbed wire has projecting barbs on a line wire; razor wire uses sharp-edged strip. They are different products and require different handling and installation arrangements.
How many rolls cover a kilometre?
Calculate the chosen number of strands, add project allowances and divide by the actual finished roll length. One kilometre of boundary is not necessarily one kilometre of wire.
What lengths are listed by WFSA?
The reviewed barbed wire range lists 845 m products and an Iowa 800 m product. Confirm the exact item before ordering.
Does Heavy galvanised (Class A) guarantee a lifespan?
No. Request the applicable coating specification and assess the site exposure.
What are the Karoo-1 line-wire dimensions?
Karoo-1 uses oval line wire. The supplied sizes are 2.80 × 1.90 mm and 3.15 × 2.50 mm. The current shop products with the 280190 stock code use 2.80 × 1.90 mm oval wire.
Can I use a competitor’s tensile value?
Only if documentation establishes that it applies to the exact supplied product. A similar name is insufficient.
Can barbed wire be used around every animal?
No universal recommendation applies. Consider species, age, behaviour and injury risk, and
