Reinforcing Steel Guide South Africa

Understand mesh, Y-bar, specifications and material calculations.

Concrete reinforcement supports tensile resistance and crack control where the design requires it. This guide connects practical product information to the reinforcing mesh, Y-bar and related materials actually listed by Wholesale Fencing SA.

For builders, contractors, hardware stores, developers, farmers, DIY customers, estimators and procurement teams: compare the listed ranges, read product names, calculate theoretical mass and plan material quantities.

What Is Concrete Reinforcement?

Concrete reinforcement is steel or another approved reinforcing material placed within concrete to help the finished element resist forces that plain concrete does not handle efficiently on its own.

Concrete performs strongly under compression but has comparatively limited tensile strength. An approved design may require reinforcement for tensile stresses, bending, shear and crack control. Steel type, quantity and position are part of that design; adding an arbitrary mesh sheet does not make a concrete element structurally adequate.

Why Is Steel Used to Reinforce Concrete?

Steel carries tensile forces while concrete carries compression and surrounds and protects the reinforcement. Bond and anchorage allow the materials to work together.

Performance depends on the specified reinforcement type, steel area, position, cover, laps and anchorage, as well as concrete strength, placing, compaction and curing. Keep to the approved drawings throughout construction. A quantity estimate or product name cannot establish the required reinforcement.

What Is Reinforcing Mesh?

Reinforcing mesh, also called welded reinforcing fabric, consists of steel wires arranged in a regular grid and welded at their intersections. Sheets provide distributed reinforcement within concrete.

Mesh is used in specified floor slabs, concrete paving, driveways, paths, precast work, selected foundations and walls. Its role and position vary by design. Reinforcing fabric is different from general-purpose fencing mesh: a fencing product should not replace a specified reinforcing product.

What Does REF Mean in Reinforcing Mesh?

REF designations such as REF100 and REF193 identify reinforcing fabric specifications. The numbers are not wire diameters.

Use the reinforcement schedule and product specification to establish the exact wires in each direction, spacing, steel area, sheet dimensions and compliance requirements. WFSA’s standard-fabric selection sheet identifies standard reference examples, but its standard REF100 example uses 4.0 mm wire; the stocked REF100 Econo product is confirmed by WFSA as 3.5 mm. Do not assume the standard reference data automatically describes an Econo variant.

What Is REF100 Reinforcing Mesh?

The inspected WFSA store lists REF100 ECO. WFSA confirms 3.5 mm wire and 2.4 m × 6 m sheets; the shop shows 11.232 kg as the product weight.

The stored title includes “<3.5MM”, whereas WFSA has supplied 3.5 mm for this guide. REF100 with a 4.0 mm SABS label is also part of the WFSA supply range; contact WFSA for a quotation and required documentation.

What Is REF193 Reinforcing Mesh?

WFSA lists two REF193 variants: Econo, confirmed as 4.8 mm, and SABS-labelled, listed as 5.6 mm. Both use WFSA-confirmed 2.4 m × 6 m sheets.

Their shop-listed masses are 18 kg and 27.792 kg respectively. The standard REF193 example in WFSA’s selection sheet gives 5.6 mm wires at 200 × 200 mm and nominal 1.93 kg/m².

What Is ECO Reinforcing Mesh?

ECO or Econo identifies WFSA’s economy mesh range. Inspect the actual wire diameter, spacing, sheet dimensions and project requirements rather than treating the reference name as proof of equivalent reinforcement.

The inspected Econo products use smaller confirmed wire diameters than the standard examples in the selection sheet. Do not substitute Econo mesh for an engineer-specified compliant fabric without the responsible designer’s approval. A lower price or matching REF number is not an approval for substitution.

What Is the Difference Between ECO and SABS/SANS Reinforcing Mesh?

A reference name, a trade label and documented compliance are different things. The WFSA shop labels one REF193 product “SABS / 5.6MM”; this guide reports that label without independently certifying the product.

Where a project requires a particular SANS standard or certification, No certification document, steel grade, yield strength or current standards edition was verified through the inspected product pages. The selection PDF cites SANS 1024:2012 as its technical basis

How Do You Read a Reinforcing Mesh Specification?

DetailWhat to check
DesignationREF reference and range, for example REF193 Econo
Wire diameterActual nominal wires in each direction, with permitted tolerances
Wire spacingBoth directions; do not derive spacing from sheet width
Sheet width and lengthWFSA confirms 2.4 m × 6 m for the WFSA REF supply range
Sheet massWhether nominal, theoretical, measured or shop-listed
ComplianceRequired standard, grade and traceable documentation

Read the full schedule, not just a quotation shorthand. A mesh designation must be reconciled with the designer’s specified steel area, spacing, arrangement and material requirements.

Reinforcing Mesh Wire Diameter

WFSA confirms 3.5 mm for REF100 Econo, 4.8 mm for REF193 Econo and 5.6 mm for its SABS-labelled REF193 sheet. The shop’s Econo titles use a “less than” symbol, so request manufacturing tolerances where relevant.

Diameter affects steel cross-sectional area quadratically. It must be considered together with wire spacing and steel properties; changing one can change the reinforcement provided. Do not infer yield strength, grade or certified steel area from diameter alone.

What Size Is a Reinforcing Mesh Sheet?

WFSA REF reinforcing mesh sheets are confirmed by WFSA as 2.4 m wide × 6 m long. Each has a gross sheet area of 14.4 m².

Gross area is not effective installed coverage after laps and cutting. The shop’s repeated 600 × 7.05 × 7.05 cm dimensions are not used here as mesh sheet dimensions. Plan transport, unloading, lifting and access for the actual full sheet.

The variants provide different reinforcement specifications. It is misleading to reduce the decision to “REF193 is stronger”: the required fabric depends on the design, steel content, grade, spacing, position, anchorage and concrete element.

What Is Y-Bar Reinforcing Steel?

Y-bar is a deformed steel reinforcing bar used in reinforced concrete. It is commonly called reinforcing bar, rebar or deformed reinforcing bar in South Africa.

Individual bars are placed and tied to the approved reinforcement drawing, often in grids or cages. The inspected WFSA listings establish diameter and length but do not provide a verified grade or yield-strength specification.

Why Does Y-Bar Have Ribs?

Ribs improve mechanical interaction and bond between reinforcing steel and surrounding concrete compared with a smooth plain bar.

Good bond still relies on the correct concrete, bar condition, cover, development/anchorage, placing and compaction. Ribbed appearance alone does not prove grade or certification. Do not grind off ribs, apply an unapproved coating, weld or modify reinforcement contrary to the project specification.

What Sizes of Y-Bar Does WFSA Supply?

25 mm6, 12 and 13 m3.858 kg/m

Theoretical mass uses d² ÷ 162 with diameter d in millimetres. It is an estimate, not a measured or guaranteed mass; verify manufacturing tolerances and actual load mass where required. Project-required steel grade and documentation must be confirmed.

How Do You Calculate the Weight of Y-Bar?

Theoretical mass per metre ≈ d² / 162 kg/m, where d is the nominal diameter in millimetres. Multiply by bar length in metres and then by the number of bars.

The density calculation is π/4 × (d/1000)² × 7,850 kg/m³, approximately 0.006165 × d² kg/m. Dividing by 162 is a convenient rounded estimator.

Calculated theoretical mass is not guaranteed actual supplied mass. Manufacturing tolerances and the specified nominal mass basis may produce small differences. No tolerance percentage is invented in this guide.

How Much Does 10 mm Y-Bar Weigh?

10 mm reinforcing bar has a theoretical mass of approximately 0.617 kg per metre, or 3.704 kg per 6 m bar, using d²/162.

WFSA lists 10 mm × 6 m Y-bar. Use the approved bar schedule for lengths and quantities.

How Much Does 12 mm Y-Bar Weigh?

12 mm reinforcing bar has a theoretical mass of approximately 0.889 kg per metre, or 5.333 kg per 6 m bar, using d²/162.

WFSA lists 12 mm × 6 m Y-bar. Use the approved bar schedule for lengths and quantities.

How Much Does 16 mm Y-Bar Weigh?

16 mm reinforcing bar has a theoretical mass of approximately 1.580 kg per metre, or 9.481 kg per 6 m bar, using d²/162.

WFSA lists 16 mm × 6 m Y-bar. Use the approved bar schedule for lengths and quantities.

How Do You Read a Y-Bar Specification?

For exampleY-Bar / 12MM / 6M describes the product type, 12 mm nominal diameter and 6 m listed length. It does not state a steel grade, yield strength or certification.

Read these alongside the engineer’s bar mark, bending shape, cut length, quantity, position and required material standard. Keep bundle identification and delivery documents so different diameters and grades are not mixed during fabrication or installation.

The full WFSA supply range includes eight diameters from 5.6 to 32 mm, with 6, 12 and 13 m supply lengths. Read diameter and length separately.

Many structures use both. Neither is a universal substitute for the other; altering the form or arrangement requires design approval.

Where Reinforcing Mesh Is Used

Welded fabric can provide distributed reinforcement in designed floor slabs, paths, paving, driveways, precast elements, walls and selected foundations. Its required reference, steel area, position and number of layers depend on the element.

Application labels in sales guides help start a discussion; they cannot select a safe reinforcement arrangement without the loads, geometry, ground/support conditions, concrete and design.

Where Y-Bar Is Used

Y-bar is used where individual reinforcing bars are specified, including beams, walls, columns, foundations, footings and slabs. Bars may form cages, grids, stirrups or other designed arrangements.

The structural drawing controls diameter, quantity, bar shape, positioning, spacing, development and laps. Do not choose these from product availability alone or substitute a smaller bar because it is easier to handle.

What Reinforcement Is Used in a Concrete Slab?

There is no single mesh or bar arrangement for every slab. Requirements depend on thickness, span, support conditions, ground, loads, concrete strength, crack-control requirements and structural design.

Mesh is common in many slab applications, but floor area alone cannot select a REF type. Obtain the reinforcement schedule before buying. The calculators below estimate quantities and mass after product selection; they do not design the slab.

What Reinforcing Mesh Should Be Used for a Driveway?

Use the driveway’s approved specification. Vehicle loads, subgrade, slab thickness, joint layout, concrete strength and design all affect the reinforcement required.

A passenger-vehicle driveway and a heavy-truck yard are not equivalent. This guide does not prescribe REF100 or REF193 universally, nor convert a sales-positioning example into a structural recommendation.

Is Reinforcing Mesh Used in Foundations?

Some foundations use individual Y-bars, reinforcing cages, mesh or combinations. The approved structural drawing determines the arrangement.

Ground conditions, foundation geometry and loads matter. Do not select foundation reinforcement by choosing whatever mesh was used for a nearby floor slab. Coordinate service penetrations, cover, chairs and anchorage with the design.

Reinforcement in Footings

Footings transfer loads into supporting ground. Their reinforcement may use specified bars, cages, mesh or a combination, with exact positioning and anchorage shown on the drawings.

Keep steel supported at the specified cover and obtain approval for changes arising from ground conditions or obstructions.

Reinforcement in Walls and Beams

Walls and beams may require longitudinal bars, distribution reinforcement and shear reinforcement. Their functions and detailing differ from a simple ground slab.

Follow the approved drawings for bar direction, spacing, hooks, anchorage, laps, cover and position. Avoid moving steel around openings or services without the responsible designer’s approval.

Why Is Reinforcement Tied?

Binding wire holds bars and mesh in their specified positions during handling, placement and pouring. Tying primarily maintains the construction layout; it does not replace the structural bond between steel and concrete.

WFSA stocks plain galvanized wire, including small-pack options. An annealed reinforcement tie-wire product was not verified in the inspected listings. Finish sharp ends safely.

What Is Concrete Cover?

Concrete cover is the distance from the outer concrete surface to the nearest surface of the reinforcing steel. It matters for corrosion protection, fire resistance, bond and durability.

Required cover depends on exposure, element, concrete, environment and applicable design standard. No universal cover dimension is given here. Measure to the nearest steel surface, including links where applicable, and maintain it using the approved supports.

Why Must Reinforcing Mesh Be Supported?

Mesh must stay at its designed position within the concrete. Approved chairs, spacers or stools maintain position and cover during pouring.

Do not leave mesh on the ground and assume it will rise into position, or rely on pulling it up during the pour. Supports must be suitable for the reinforcement and construction loading. Check stability before concrete placement and prevent workers or equipment from displacing the mesh.

How Much Should Reinforcing Mesh Overlap?

Follow the approved reinforcement drawing or project specification. Lap requirements depend on mesh type, diameter, spacing, structural purpose, stress, position and applicable design requirements.

A universal rule such as one square, 300 mm or 400 mm is not supplied here. Resolve unclear lap details before ordering or cutting; laps change installed coverage and may affect the number of sheets. Ties secure positioning but do not independently establish an adequate lap.

How Is Reinforcing Mesh Cut?

Use an appropriate commercial mesh cutter or cutting equipment suitable for the actual wire. Secure and support the sheet, plan cuts from the drawing and control movement as wires are cut.

Use gloves, eye protection and the required workplace PPE. Manage sharp wire ends, loose offcuts and manual-handling risks. Keep others clear and preserve the planned lap/anchorage lengths. Do not use unsafe improvised cutting methods.

How Is Y-Bar Cut?

Use a suitable rebar cutter, appropriate abrasive cutting equipment or a suitable saw following its operating procedure. Check bar marks, cut lengths and bending requirements before cutting.

Secure the bar, use the required PPE and manage sparks, sharp ends and nearby combustible material. Do not alter specified bends, welds or heat treatment without approval. Keep cut bars identified by size and bar mark.

How Should Reinforcing Steel Be Handled and Stored?

Store on stable, level supports away from excessive mud and standing water. Organise by type and diameter, retain identification, prevent unsafe rolling or collapsing stacks, and provide safe access for lifting.

Use suitable mechanical handling for sheets and bundles, with trained operators and approved lifting arrangements. Do not mix bar sizes. Reinforcement need not always remain completely dry, but contamination, corrosion condition and any storage damage must meet the project specification.

Light Surface Oxidation and Damaging Corrosion

Reinforcing mesh, Y-bar and certain Brickforce products are supplied as raw or black steel without a protective zinc coating. When raw steel is exposed to humidity, rain, condensation, water or wet storage conditions, a light orange-brown layer of surface oxidation can develop quickly. Light surface rust is normal on uncoated reinforcing steel and does not by itself mean that the material is defective or unsuitable for use. Heavy flaky or scaly corrosion, deep pitting, or significant loss of steel section, mass or dimension is different and should be assessed against the applicable product and project specification.

Y-bar surface condition

Y-bar is normally supplied as raw reinforcing steel. Light surface oxidation may develop during normal storage and handling, particularly after exposure to moisture. Bright, rust-free steel should not be presented as a requirement unless the applicable project specification specifically requires a particular surface condition.

REF / reinforcing mesh surface condition

Uncoated reinforcing mesh can develop orange surface oxidation rapidly after exposure to rain, condensation or humidity. Light surface oxidation must be distinguished from deep or flaky corrosion that materially affects the steel.

Oil, paint, mud and other contamination affecting bond must meet the project specification. Refer heavy corrosion, section loss or uncertainty to the responsible engineer. Cleaning must not damage ribs or reduce the steel below the required condition.

This guidance applies to raw / black / uncoated reinforcement. Galvanized Brickforce, galvanized steel and coated reinforcement have separate protective-coating specifications and must be assessed accordingly. Surface oxidation does not establish steel grade, compliance or structural suitability; the applicable project specification and responsible engineer determine acceptance where required.

How Many Reinforcing Mesh Sheets Do I Need?

Initial sheet count = ceiling(project area ÷ gross sheet area). Area = length × width; the confirmed 6 m × 2.4 m WFSA sheet has 14.4 m² gross area.

For a 10 m × 8 m rectangle, 80 ÷ 14.4 = 5.56, rounded up to 6 full sheets before laps. A selected 10% material allowance gives ceiling(80 × 1.10 ÷ 14.4) = 7 sheets. This is not a cutting layout or final schedule.

Required laps, sheet orientation, irregular geometry, openings, cutting, waste and structural detailing can change the actual quantity. A waste percentage does not automatically provide the required laps.

Reinforcing Mesh Sheet Calculator

This calculator provides a material-estimating starting point only. Reinforcement laps, cutting layout and structural requirements must be taken from the approved project specification. WFSA REF sheets use confirmed 6 m × 2.4 m gross dimensions.

How Do I Calculate Y-Bar Quantities?

Read the approved bar schedule: multiply the required number of bars by their specified cut lengths to estimate total linear metres. Convert metres to theoretical mass using the diameter-specific kg/m.

For example, ten specified 12 mm bars at 6 m each total 60 m. Their theoretical estimator mass is 60 × 12²/162 = 53.333 kg. This does not establish the required number, spacing or cut length. Cutting yield, bends, anchorage and laps must follow the schedule; total metres divided by 6 m alone may understate stock lengths if offcuts cannot be used.

Y-Bar Weight Calculator

Calculated theoretical mass. Actual supplied mass may vary within manufacturing tolerances. WFSA supply lengths are 6, 12 and 13 m; entering another cut length estimates mass and does not establish a stocked length. This tool does not determine reinforcement spacing or structural requirements.

Common Reinforcing Steel Mistakes

  • Buying by product name without checking actual specification
  • Confusing REF designation with wire diameter
  • Substituting Econo mesh for specified compliant mesh without approval
  • Using incorrect bar diameter or spacing
  • Leaving mesh directly on the ground
  • Using incorrect concrete cover
  • Providing insufficient or unstable chairs
  • Using unapproved laps
  • Moving mesh during concrete placement
  • Cutting bars before checking the drawings
  • Mixing different bar sizes
  • Unsafe stacks or poor handling
  • Allowing heavy contamination
  • Ignoring the engineer’s drawings
  • Selecting structural reinforcement from slab area alone

Check the complete reinforcement arrangement before pouring. Resolve discrepancies while they can still be corrected; a later product invoice cannot prove steel was installed in its designed position.

Reinforcing Steel FAQs

What is reinforcing mesh?

Welded steel-wire grid sheets used for distributed reinforcement within concrete.

What does REF mean?

It identifies a reinforcing fabric specification. The number is not a wire diameter; consult the schedule for wires, spacing and steel area.

What is REF100?

A fabric reference. WFSA lists REF100 Econo, confirmed as 3.5 mm in 2.4 × 6 m sheets; do not confuse it with the 4.0 mm standard example.

What is REF193?

A fabric reference. WFSA lists Econo 4.8 mm and SABS-labelled 5.6 mm variants, both confirmed as 2.4 × 6 m sheets.

What is ECO reinforcing mesh?

WFSA’s economy range. Its actual specification must be checked; the ECO name does not establish standards compliance.

What is SABS reinforcing mesh?

A term used in WFSA’s REF193 product label. Confirm the relevant standard and documentation rather than treating the label alone as a certificate.

What size is a reinforcing mesh sheet?

WFSA confirms its REF reinforcing sheets as 2.4 m × 6 m, giving 14.4 m² gross area before laps.

How much does reinforcing mesh weigh?

The shop lists 11.232 kg for REF100 Econo, 18 kg for REF193 Econo and 27.792 kg for REF193 SABS-labelled.

How do I calculate reinforcing mesh sheets?

Divide project area by gross sheet area and round up for an initial count. Allow for approved laps, cutting layout, waste and detailing before final ordering.

What mesh should I use for a concrete slab?

Use the approved structural specification; area alone cannot determine the required mesh.

What is Y-bar?

A deformed reinforcing steel bar used in concrete.

What sizes of Y-bar are available?

WFSA supplies 5.6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm Y-bar in 6, 12 and 13 m lengths. Request a quotation and confirm current branch availability.

How do you calculate rebar weight?

Multiply theoretical kg/m by bar length and quantity, using the nominal diameter.

How much should reinforcing mesh overlap?

Follow the approved drawing or project specification; no universal lap dimension is given.

Can rusty reinforcing steel be used?

Light surface oxidation alone does not automatically make raw reinforcing steel defective or unacceptable. Uncoated reinforcing mesh can develop orange surface oxidation rapidly after exposure to rain, condensation or humidity. Light surface oxidation must be distinguished from deep or flaky corrosion that materially affects the steel. Heavy scaling, deep pitting or significant loss of section, mass or dimension needs assessment against the applicable specification by the responsible engineer. Coated reinforcement has separate coating requirements.
